If you're a child of the '80s like me, the images of the Tiananmen Square demonstrations in Beijing, China, are forever seared into your brain and heart. And even if you can't remember that far back (or you weren't born yet), chances are you've come across them at one point or another. The peaceful pro-democracy protests, which began with students marching in memory of former party leader Hu Yaobang went on for seven weeks. While many of the initial protestors were of high school and college age, eventually an estimated million people joined in, angered by widespread corruption and calling for democracy.
After calls for the protestors to leave, Chinese army tanks rumbled into the square, and hundreds of unarmed protestors were shot and killed while a horrified world watched. Now, 25 years later, the images are an emotional reminder of what happened that day:
