Joo Seong-chan was dispatched to solve a hostage case occurred in South Asia. When the boss of the criminal gang saw the money handed over from Joo Seong-chan, he angrily claimed, "It doesn't like more than only one portion".

Joo Seong-chan said, "This is the maximum that the company could accommodate. I'll try to persuade the company if there's anything else you want other than cash and goods".

The gangster aimed his gun Joo Seong-chan on the head threatening him, "I can just kill you here and eat up the money". Joo Seong-chan confronted, "Why can't you shoot me then? It's because you're a businessman. If you just kill me here and take the money, then it's the end of your business. People will know clearly that you'd kill your negotiator and take the money. Who would want to do a business with you next time".

Ju is a corporate negotiator-turned-policeman who has seemingly mastered the art of persuasion. He strives to resolve crises through communication rather than force.

Shin Ha-kyun on ‘Detour,’ love

Source: INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily

28212448.jpg

Shin Ha-kyun [PARK SE-WAN]

Actor Shin Ha-kyun is well-known for being a taciturn person with a serious personality. This is well-reflected in many of his projects, in which Shin mostly plays serious roles. However, the 42-year-old recently decided to make a change.

In his latest comedy movie “Detour,” released last week, Shin plays a 39-year-old single man, whose job is at risk solely because he doesn’t have a family. The story revolves around three men in their late 30s, who usually hide their feelings in the workplace, like most office workers. The movie comically shows these three men expressing their frustrations and hidden emotions when they get together.

Shin sat down with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, to talk about the newest movie and how he feels about his character. The following are edited excerpts from the interview:

Q. What do you think about your new movie?

A. As always, I was most nervous during the press preview. It’s not that there is something wrong, but I wonder whether there are some scenes that are either too much or are not able to fully deliver their meaning. But overall, I believe the movie was generally entertaining.

What made you star in “Detour?”

I thought it was a movie that can function as a relief to those who are tired or frustrated. I also liked the movie’s message that encourages viewers to overcome difficulties, saying that there is more than one road to walk in one’s lives. The movie is especially well-suited for men, who want to gather and laugh about something. I also wanted to show it to my friends.

Do you agree that the movie may not be entertaining for women?

I understand the story, which revolves around men, and how women may feel about the plot. Since “Detour” is a sexy comedy, some women may find the scenes uncomfortable. But that is not the gist of the movie. Once people start working, there aren’t many places for them to talk about their feelings. But all those suppressed emotions burst when they meet up with friends. It is right that men don’t completely understand women’s worlds. But the same applies to women. I hope female viewers take this into consideration.

You play a character who is at risk of losing his job for not having a family to feed. How much can you empathize with the character?

I can’t empathize with the character 100 percent as I have never worked in an office. But I can understand how it would feel when I think of not getting offers for projects. Suddenly losing one’s job can happen to anyone despite their profession.

Your character in the film has difficulty getting over his first lover. What about your first love in reality?

[While filming], I was able to reminisce about [my first love]. Back then, I only thought about what I wanted to say, and couldn’t actually deliver that thought [to my first lover]. I was a coward and not brave. But I’m different now. As I got older, my thoughts gradually changed.

Do you remember your first love?

Of course I do. I even remember when I was still in kindergarten. And it hasn’t been that long since I met my first love (laughs). I met her in my early 20s, but I couldn’t even look her in the eyes. I guess I was too shy. I also remember sweating too much whenever she was around. And since my ears become very red when I am nervous, I remember always holding my ears when I was with her.

To turn to your daily life, what do you usually do?

There are so many things that one can do alone. Since I like toys, I make and assemble a lot of them. I also enjoy listening to music and watching movies. When I feel like exercising, I exercise and when I feel like drinking, I drink. I’m not a person who easily feels lonely.

Have you ever dreamed of breaking away from the routine of your daily life?

I have never actually done something that would catch other people’s eyes. Although I may not completely break away from daily life, I often enjoy doing what I want. These days, I like going to the sea.

You are known for not speaking much. Have you had to make an effort to add more humor to your speaking style to suit your entertainment shows?

Not really. Although I think I’m suitable for entertainment shows, I do not think of myself as funny or humorless. I don’t think I’m boring.

Actor Shin Ha-kyun, actress Kim Go-eun end relationship

SEOUL, March 22 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actor Shin Ha-kyun and actress Kim Go-eun have recently broken up, their agency said Wednesday.

HODU&U Entertainment, which represents both Shin and Kim, said that the star couple ended their eight-month romantic relationship in late February, citing their busy schedules as the reason for the split.

In August of last year, the couple broke news that they were dating after having known each other as colleagues. The news gained headlines for the stars' 17-year age difference.

Shin has recently ended filming his new thriller "Room 7." Kim, star of last year's hit tvN drama "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God," is currently filming a number of TV commercials.

(News Focus) Korean moviegoers not only watch films but now invest in them

By Woo Jae-yeon, Cho Jae-young

SEOUL, April 3 (Yonhap) -- The new domestic film "Room No. 7" has recently raised 2 billion won (US$1.79 million) through crowdfunding, less than a week since it started the campaign.

The yet-to-be-released black comedy, satirical of capitalism, is the second work by director Lee Yong-seung, who debuted as a director in 2013 with "10 Minutes" and the 37th film by production company Myung Films, the producer of "Joint Security Area."

The total production cost was 1 billion won, meaning 1.2 million ticket sales will be needed to reach the break-even point. If so, investors will get a 3.7 percent profit in return for their investment. If not, they will suffer a 20 percent loss.

"We have reached the target amount sooner than expected. It is because investors have high hopes for the film's success," a company official said. "Also it helps that we fixed the maximum loss at 20 percent of the investment."

Crowdfunding for films seems to be gaining momentum in Korea.

According to Wadiz, an online crowdfunding operator, a total of 29 films staged financing campaigns through its website in the past year. Nineteen films successfully reached their target amounts.

The first film to successfully run a crowdfunding campaign was "Northern Limit Line," released in 2015.

The movie production team turned to the public for financing in June 2013 as it faced financing difficulties. It raised 890 million won through three rounds of crowdfunding. Including other types of donations, the total amount reached 2 billion won, one-third of the production cost. Donors' names, 7,000 people in total, were shown for 11 minutes when the credits rolled.

"Spirits' Homecoming," a historical film about Korean sex slaves for Japanese soldiers during World War II, also collected 1.2 billion won, half of the production cost, through the same manner.

This image provided by Opus Pictures shows a poster for "New Trial." (Yonhap)

Recently, crowdfunding that guarantees a fixed rate of profit according to box-office results is becoming more popular.

Since its premier on Feb. 15, "New Trial" attracted more than 2 million moviegoers, surpassing its break-even number of 1.6 million. The movie returned a 17.1 percent profit to crowdfunding participants.

Meanwhile, some production companies actively use campaigns as much for promotional purposes as for financing resources.

"People who join a crowdfunding campaign promote the movie in the hope of the film's success. In some cases, actors invest in films they appear in," an official from Wadiz told Yonhap News Agency.

But not all the films turn out to be successful. "The Hunt," which was released last year and amassed 3 million won through crowdfunding, recorded a whopping 70 percent loss as only 650,000 moviegoers showed up to see the film, far less than the break-even number of 1.64 million.
